FLAUNT YOUR FLAIR! - ID Greatness!

Hi, it nice to reach you in the acada way! You know what? Whether you like it or not, you’ve got a flair for something and you’ve got to flaunt it! Flair, in this context, refers to your natural talents, personal strengths and gifts. This reminds me of an idiom “If you’ve got it, flaunt it!” It is usually said to mean that if you have something you are proud of, such as beauty, success or wealth, you should make it obvious, put it on display for all eyes to see. For example, someone could say if I had legs like yours I'd wear really short dresses. If you've got it, flaunt it!

Do you know you’ve got great flairs that could mesmerize the world?
Here is what I am talking about. Are that kind of person who steps into a room with people, makes a remark and the whole room explodes in laughter? Maybe you are naturally good at one of the following; writing, singing, dancing, athletics, drumming, playing a musical instrument, talking, drawing, counting, keeping record of issues or events, taking pictures, painting, asking questions, playing games such as chess, and so on. Find out those things you do effortlessly, things you enjoy doing and that come to you naturally.

Take time to think deeply about the talents you have. Don’t be in a rush. Feel free to ask people what they think are your talents. At times, people around us see things we cannot see about ourselves. Ask your parents, guardians, friends and neighbours what they have noticed about you. Take note of everything they tell you and then do a review. At times, your special abilities may be very noticeable that you don’t have to look too far for them.

The next step is to awaken the sleeping giant in you by taking action to improve, develop and maximize your talents. To improve, you’ve got to move. Nothing really moves until you move. For instance, my elder brother has multiple talents of drawing, painting, singing and composing songs. After his secondary school, he read General Art and today he is an Art Director with an advertising agency. Also, he sings at church and at functions. He composes songs effortlessly. How did it all begin? He found out his talents and worked on them.

As for me, I love reading, writing and public speaking. I read Mass Communication at the University of Lagos because I wanted to become an expert in communicating winning insights and that is what I am into right now. You have to do something about your flairs. Move closer to people that can encourage you or help you develop them. Gather information and resources that can help you learn faster. Most importantly, always look for opportunities to flaunt your flair! For example, if you want to be a motivational speaker, you can prepare a 5-10 minutes motivational speech and give it to a small group, school or club. If you can write, start sending articles to newspapers/magazines.

You’re born to succeed and I believe you are going to become an achiever. But take your talents seriously and develop them very well. Fan your flairs into flames. Sorry, I really meant fan your flairs into fame, not flames! Unleash your potentials! They are the gifts of greatness that God has given to you. Never believe the lie that you have no talent. You’re a gifted! Wake up and begin to think now. Frank Tyger said “Your future depends on many things, but mostly on you”.

Billy Sunday was right when he said that more men fail through lack of purpose than lack of talent. Everyone has a talent. It is only those who have been bitten by the bug of inferiority complex that think others are better and superior to them. The truth is that you’re completely unique and you have no business competing with anyone!

Beijing 2008 Olympics is now history! One thing that particularly struck me was the fact that many of the contestants were very young. That probably means that they must have discovered their flair early enough and underwent training. They came to the Olympics and flaunted their flairs before the world!

The Jamaican sprinter, Usain Bolt, is currently the fastest man on earth. It is really interesting to learn that he’s just 22 years old! His name and achievements in sprinting has earned him a nickname “Lighting Bolt”. Usain Bolt’s success wasn’t a bolt out of the blues. His high performance wasn’t by chance or good luck. He must have discovered his flair for sprint, developed it passionately till he turned a professional in 2004 and today he’s the rave of the moment!

Though I am not yet a parent, I believe that parents should watch out for the talents in their growing kids. Once they can identify the talent, the next step is to place that child in a favourable environment and provide resources that can help the child develop that talent. I have noticed that on this side of the world, parents don’t really look out for these wonderful talents. I may not be right, but I think most parents just want their kids to become a medical doctor, lawyer, engineer, accountant and so on. They just focus on sending their kids to school to bag degrees in some lucrative disciplines Where as, some of these kids have flairs for some kind of sports.

You know what? I believe we’ve had medical doctors, who could have earned the title “the fastest man on earth”. Let us get out of the mindset that the successful people are people who studied engineering, medicine, accounting, law, mass communication e.t.c. Let me ask you a question? What if Usain Bolt was born to you and he’s passionate about running? Would you, as a parent, support him morally and financially? The point am trying to make is that parents should study their kids, encourage them to follow their flairs and before long they’ll be celebrated globally!

Sweetheart, I’m throwing a challenge at you! Figure out your flair(s), go out there and flaunt it! You’ve got to show it to the world! The world is waiting for that special contribution you were born to make! It’s time for you to seize the sky!
